CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Edward Kenway
• Character Age: 42
• Character Canon: Assassin's Creed
• Canon Point: Post-death in Assassin's Creed: Forsaken.

• Character History: the AC Wiki page for Edward.

• Character Personality:

— JOVIAL: Edward is a friendly fellow, and when he's not intimidating people into surrendering all their cargo or sneaking around killing people, he's a witty, cheery sort of person, the kind you could grab some rum and shoot the breeze with. He's charming enough that he can get in good with almost anyone, so long as they don't know him better. He's even affable enough to joke around with Duncan Walpole, a treacherous Assassin who killed Edward's captain at the start of the game, greeting him with a laugh and a little ribbing as he stumbles onto the beach. (And then he kills him after the guy shoots at him, so Edward's affability is limited to those who don't try to kill him outright.) He's friendly to a great variety of people across the game, from his ex-slave quartermaster to the barmaid at the local tavern to his fellow pirate captains—on a one-on-one casual interaction, he's not about to start a fight if he can just talk them around.
— LOYAL: The thing that redeems Edward is he is goddamn loyal to his people. He's a pirate captain who's faithful to his wife back in Bristol (barring the occasional prostitute), and who's loyal to his crew and fellow pirates, often coming to their rescue against Spanish or English guards. He doesn't begrudge his quartermaster Adéwalé for leaving him to be captured, because he knows Adé was trying to protect the Jackdaw from Edward's bad decisions. He sneaks through a prison full of guards with only one other person helping him out to save Mary Read and Anne Bonny. He does his very best to save Thatch from getting killed, and it hits him hard when he's not able to. He doesn't tell anyone that James Kidd is actually Mary Read, and doesn't even think to use this against her. This also means he is fucking furious when he's betrayed, nearly killing Charles Vane and actually killing Ben Hornigold, who were both fellow pirates, the latter having served as a mentor figure for Edward before he turned to pirate hunting. This trait, however, can blind him—he trusts those that he's loyal to almost without reservation, which turned out to be a very bad idea leading to Edward's own tragic end, in the case of his property manager Reginald Birch, who also (unbeknownst to Edward) is the Templar Grandmaster.
— CLEVER: Edward is the helmsman, navigator, and captain of the Jackdaw, as well as the master of a fleet of ships that comprise something of a trade empire, so you know he can juggle the required numbers and plan a route well enough. The optional objectives, and the sheer amount of tailing missions in gameplay, also tell us that Edward tended to take a stealthier, sneakier approach to solving his problems, often preferring to not start a fight or even be noticed at all if he thinks the risks of the in-your-face approach outweigh the benefits. He's even proud of his sneakiness, boasting to another pirate that he'll "barely ruffle a flea on [their enemies'] heads" before embarking on stealing the enemy's flag from their ship. Certainly he's willing and even happy to throw down and start a fight, but he sees the value in gathering information first, or simply in just bluffing his way past enemies and not even raising an alarm.

— AMBITIOUS: Edward, at the start of his journey, wants nothing more than to become a man of quality, with riches aplenty, and to return home to his wife Caroline as someone who can not only keep a roof over her head, but keep her in a grand, lavish lifestyle. To this end, he's willing to do whatever it takes to climb to the top of the mountain, up to and including seeking out a seeming myth such as the Observatory in the belief that its supposed abilities will make him and the pirates of Nassau rich beyond their wildest dreams. It takes almost the entire game before Edward realizes how his relentless treasure-seeking has pushed him too far and alienated all his loved ones from him, and before then he lets his ambition blind him to such a point where he's willing to team up with someone like Bartholomew Roberts, who has consistently proven himself willing to betray even those who try to help him, to achieve his goals, to the grief of his crew and his friends.
— RECKLESS: Edward is often first to board an enemy ship, cutlasses in hand, to cut down resistance. He thinks nothing of scaling sheer walls and rickety old ruins to get to his goals, nor of jumping off high walls to land in haystacks far below. A side activity in the game is just hand-to-hand bar brawls with thugs that far outnumber him. Edward knows what he's capable of, is confident in his skills to the point of sheer cockiness, and is absolutely happy to prove it. The hell of it is, he is that good at what he does, he just also doesn't seem to really consider the idea that he might fail in the process, or at least that succeeding at his goals won't be everything he thought it was. This recklessness is in full view in the first couple of sequences in the game, where he decides to assume the identity of Duncan Walpole, an Assassin he killed, in order to collect the man's reward from the Templars, without quite clocking that maybe walking into the Templars' stronghold with little more than a costume and documents he stole off a corpse and a posh accent, and with no prior knowledge of the Templars and Assassins beforehand, might be a very bad idea.
— STUBBORN: When his mind is fixed on a goal, Edward will stop at nothing and do anything to achieve it. While his determination is an admirable trait, he can very easily tip over into spiteful stubbornness, his vision narrowed down to this one thing he's chasing after on the horizon, even as all his loved ones try to talk sense into him. His desire to become a man of wealth and quality makes him greedy and selfish, putting his own betterment first above almost all things. Even after his character development, when he becomes far less selfish and far more heroic, he still can develop a bad case of tunnel vision and disregard the desires of people he loves—he disregards his daughter Jenny's wishes in order to marry her off to someone, and because he likely didn't tell her why he was doing it, she believes he's doing so because he wants to give more attention to Haytham, his male heir.

• Character Skills:

• Assassin - Edward, as an Assassin, is highly-trained in stealth and combat and parkour. He can also jump from high points and fall into haystacks and somehow not break his neck in the process, and no, I'm not sure how that works.
• Sailor - Edward used to be a privateer then a pirate, and was trained by Blackbeard and Hornigold. He can swim very well and can hold his breath for a while, and has managed to not get killed by sharks or eels. He's a good swordfighter (can dual-wield two blades) and passable enough at whatever other weapons he picks up (including the hidden blade), and is even deadlier now with years of experience and Assassin training.
• Hunting and foraging - Edward has experience in hunting animals and harpooning sea creatures, and once was marooned on a fairly deserted island and was able to forage for his food for a time.
• Marksman - Edward is good at gunslinging, for an ex-pirate from the 1730s. He can operate a pistol and a musket rifle with little fuss, although he'll need to update his knowledge when confronted with more modern-day guns. According to Forsaken, he also at some point learned how to use a bow and arrow.

• Character Inventory:

— ITEM ONE: Assassin robes from Black Flag, which he looted from Duncan Walpole and heavily modified to suit himself better. Has finely-made leather armor that keeps him from taking too much damage in a fight.
— ITEM TWO: One hidden blade in its bracer.
— ITEM THREE: A pistol.
